God in the Dock

08 May 2007 03:13 pm

Credit where credit is due - Christopher Hitchens seems willing to argue the question of God's greatness or lack thereof anytime, anywhere. Here's an account of his debate with Al Sharpton, which sounds (as you might expect) like fine entertainment that left something to be desired on the intellectual side of things; here, more promisingly, is the beginning of an extended exchange between Hitchens and Douglas Wilson, hosted by Christianity Today, on the question "Is Christianity Good for the World?" (Wilson is also blogging his way through God is Not Great on his own site.)

Of course, what I'd really like to see is a Hitchens-Daniel Larison face-off ...

Oh, boy. Just read Wilson's response. I think Hitchens would've been more persuasive playing devil's advocate with himself (and I say that as a Wilson sympathizer).

This whole debate is practically going to write itself. Hitchens is going to come back with his argument for the de-linking of ethics and morality. Wilson will quote Paul's dictum that all men have the law written on their hearts,a nd that only the redeemed can apprehend higher, spiritual things. Hitchens, in turn, will say, "Precisely! The crux of the matter is whether these 'spiritual things' are true or delusional." Blah, blah, blah.

As for the institutions of civil order, Hitchens will come back with Jefferson, the secular Constitution, church-state separation. Blah, blah, blah.

I can't believe people still make money publishing this kind of thing.

You are being facetious about the Larison piece, right? You don't really find it interesting, right?

You should know that Doug Wilson is a very unsavory fellow. He runs a church in Moscow Idaho which is close to being a labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. He co-authored a monograph defending slavery in the United States, entitled "Southern Slavery as it Was."
