Republicans For Obama

01 May 2007 12:54 pm

Discussing that Pew data I mentioned earlier, which shows that the public's perception of a candidate's ideological stance often bears little resemblance to their actual ideological stance, Matt hits on a deep point:

... this is both terrible news for Clinton (as I wrote with Sam it would be crazy for liberals to choose the least-liberal available nominee when she's also seen as the most liberal choice) and also seems to call into question the "unquestioned brilliance" of Mark Penn. His strategy has been for Clinton to stake out an increasingly conservative issue profile to win the general election. It seems, however, that issue profiles don't do much to alter perceptions of public figures.

For an example of what this means in practice, consider this passage from Larissa McFarquhar's Obama profile in the current New Yorker:

Obama’s voting record is one of the most liberal in the Senate, but he has always appealed to Republicans, perhaps because he speaks about liberal goals in conservative language. When he talks about poverty, he tends not to talk about gorging plutocrats and unjust tax breaks; he says that we are our brother’s keeper, that caring for the poor is one of our traditions. Asked whether he has changed his mind about anything in the past twenty years, he says, “I’m probably more humble now about the speed with which government programs can solve every problem. For example, I think the impact of parents and communities is at least as significant as the amount of money that’s put into education.” Obama encourages his crossover appeal. He doesn’t often criticize the Bush Administration directly; in New Hampshire recently, he told his audience, “I’m a Democrat. I’m considered a progressive Democrat. But if a Republican or a Conservative or a libertarian or a free-marketer has a better idea, I am happy to steal ideas from anybody and in that sense I’m agnostic.” “The number of conservatives who’ve called me—roommates of mine, relatives who are Republicans—who’ve said, ‘He’s the one Democrat I could support, not because he agrees with me, because he doesn’t, but because I at least think he’ll take my point of view into account,’ ” Michael Froman, a law-school friend who worked in the Clinton Administration and is now involved in Obama’s campaign, says.

Now objectively, this is silly. Obama is clearly to the left of Hillary Clinton, and while being rhetorically open-minded is a nice quality in a President, it's not much of a substitute for being substantively closer to the center. But you know what? I'm a conservative, I know that Obama is to Hillary's left on most issues, and even so I often find myself feeling exactly the same way as Michael Froman's Republican friends.

Fortunately, Bruce Bartlett is keeping his head.

I'm not sure it's so silly.

I would say your limbic system is taking into account a broad range of possible outcomes. It knows candidates sometimes lie. It also knows we're about to give away a lot of power to one individual, which we can't easily take back again later. That individual could respond to the unpredictable pressures of presidency by becoming an extreme ideologue. The voting record is an imperfect predictor of how someone will react to these outlier events, in which your interests as the dissenting party are really trampled on.

Your emotional brain has evolved through centuries of tyrants, big and small. It looks for evidence that the authority-to-be feels a sense of human allegiance to all his constituents, no matter what. Some sort of essential kinship, as well as an intellectual ability to see your point of view. This lessens the chance of an extreme power shift where you become a persecuted out-group.

So I'd argue it's more important for a candidate to have a moderate approach than a moderate platform. At least, that the emotional brain thinks so.

It's very silly. I'm a Conservative Democrat, and Republicans who support Obama now will eat crow if he becomes president, which he won't. He'd be a failure, and according to that Newsweek with Arnold Schwarzenegger spinning that globe, it looks as though Obama has the least environmental policy out of Clinton, himself, Edwards, Giuliani, McCain, and Romney. I say even Mitt Romney, Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, and Jim Gilmore have a better shot at the presidency than Obama because Obama is a freak.

Flannery,

That is unfair. Obama may not become Presidnet, fair enough -not many people do. However, he seems to be the most reasonable candiate out there, at least rhetorically (and im a republican). He's deffinately not a freak.

Flannery, the apparent ease and comfort you hold in resorting to such labels tells us a lot about what you don't care to analyze in the issue or candidate.

Thanks for wasting my time.

Wait, Freak? What? If you are going to slam Obama, at least do it intelligently.

Just because he is black AND intelligent doesn't make him a freak.

Woot, race card.

The love the Republicans have for Obama is strange. Is there a comparable Democratic boom for Duncan Hunter?

Anon: "he seems to be the most reasonable candiate out there, at least rhetorically"

What does this even mean? I've never heard him say he hates Republicans, the way some Democrats do. But I've never heard HRC say that either.

There's just something...calming about Barack's personality. He's a throw back to how politics used to be (or at least how we think they used to be).

How many comments have you read over the last ten years reminiscing about how politicians used to be able to fight like dogs during the day and then go out for some beers afterward?

That narrative is appealing to a lot of people, and I think those people see that in Obama.

There weren't millions of Reagan Democrats because suddenly Democrats realized they were conservatives or were confused about where Reagan stood on issues, they just liked him.

I think people who aren't political junkies feel the polarization of our politics even more than folks like us who are knee deep in it. And for them, regardless of their personal politics, don't view Obama as a liberal, moderate or conservative, they see him simply as a breath of fresh air.

All of us, or at least the great majority of us, would rather have a president who disagrees with us on "insert issue" but who's fair and competent, than a president who agrees with us but is not. And that, I think, is Obama's biggest selling point as of right now. People have an apolitical trust of the guy..if he can maintain that trust, he might just find himself in the oval office someday.

As Mr Sullivan noted earlier today on this site, "conservatism-as-temperament is often more authentic than conservatism-as-ideology." Not only more authentic, but also more needed. What we need are not policy ideas -- just read a few journals to see how many disparate ideas are out there -- but a leader that can transcend mere policy and politics. Today's cynical society can barely concede that is even possible -- a sure sign of just how far backwards we have slipped. I long for true leadership to take its rightful place once more, the kind that unites us as Americans to take on challenges greater than ourselves.

It's amusing but frightening to see how so many people are willfully deluding themselves about Sen. Obama. He's the most leftwing candidate with a chance of getting elected in recent years, but lots of people would prefer not to know and to keep wishing that he is the candidate of their dreams, rather than the man he actually is.

These ignorant infatuations with politicians -- how well exactly have they worked out for us?

Your emotional brain has evolved through centuries of tyrants, big and small.

The worst of those tyrants probably had a say in our breeding, which may be why we're so easily manipulated.

That said, as a leftie myself, I don't think it's insane for conservative to support Obama over, say, Edwards or even Hilary. His true beliefs may be way to the left, but he's also always preaching compromise. Surely the fact that he's preaching compromise during the primary speaks volumes.

I don't understand the comments that Obama is a freak. I think he is the most normal man the Democrats have had as a front runner since I don't know when. (Mondale was a normal man but boring).

I like him. I would never vote for him, because he is a stone cold Lefty but I like the guy. I think people would like an election where if you said you hated one of the nominees people would look at you funny.

There is only one reason a conservative should vote for a Democrat in a national election. The Democrats will then own the war and have to act responsibly. Bartlett is crazy if he thinks we can have any influence on the wicked witch of the North. If defeat is inevitable (and like Inigo Montoya with "inconcievable" I say "that word, I don think it means what you think it means.") Any Republican, even Romney can beat Hilary. We must keep Obama or Edwards off the top of the ticket and let her natural talents carry us to victory. Whether we want to win with Giuliani on the top of the ticket is a separate question.

I don't get the comments about how nice a guy Obama is. Or rather, I don't follow the implication that the other candidates are so obnoxious. If you are a half-way serious candidate for President of the US, you have above average people skills by definition. Hillary Clinton is not the person I'd pick as President but that is not personal, its political. I'm quite willing to believe that she is a decent human being.

he's (Obama) also always preaching compromise

Democrats are always preaching compromise. And it always means the same thing - Republicans should compromise their beliefs to accomodate others.

Obama is appealing to many socially conscious and fed-up Republicans. His history and stance on the war in Iraq alone gives many people reason to endorse him. And yes, there are Republicans that want out of Iraq in the manner he is proposing.
