Choosing Life

02 Jun 2007 10:45 am

This is my last Knocked Up post, I swear (must ... finish ... actual ... review), but I couldn't let this Dana Stevens line pass:

Allow me to briefly divagate here on the nonexistence of abortion as an option in Knocked Up. This omission smells of the focus group, and it's a disappointment in a movie that otherwise prides itself on its unsentimental honesty about the realities of unplanned parenthood. It's just not believable that, in Alison and Ben's upper-middle-class, secular L.A. milieu, abortion would not be matter-of-factly discussed as a possibility in the case of a pregnancy this accidental. If she doesn't want one, great—obviously, there'd be no movie if she did—but let's hear about why not. Otherwise, her character becomes a cipher, a foil for Ben's epiphanies about growing up, without being allowed any epiphanies of her own. The biggest unanswered question about Heigl's character is one the movie never tiptoes near—why does she decide to keep the baby?

Now Stevens is right that a typical young, upwardly-mobile, apparently-secular female professional who gets pregnant from a one-night stand with a loserish guy is a prime candidate to get an abortion, and the Knocked Up scenario is, in that regard, sociologically unlikely. But it's simply not true that the movie tiptoes around the abortion issue, or makes it seem like the option doesn't exist: There are two conversations in which first the hero and then the heroine are explicitly urged to get an abortion, Seth Rogen's Ben by one of his slacker housemates and Katherine Heigl's Alison by her mother. And it's very clear, in the context of the film's script, why Katherine decides to keep the baby - because abortion is a really horrible thing to do, and only a buffoon (Ben's friend) or a hissable villain (Alison's Mom, who tells her to wait till she's ready to have a "real baby") would tell someone to get one. I have no idea where Judd Apatow stands on the politics of abortion - if I had to guess, I'd say he's probably a Saletan-style "it's bad, but it has to be legal" type - but as far as the morality of the procedure goes, Knocked Up is almost naively pro-life: Of course Alison decided to "keep" the baby, the script suggests, because killing it would be terribly and obviously wrong, and she's not a bad person. This may be sociologically unrealistic, but it's not a "let's not offend the audience" cop-out.

If you read Seth Rogen's interview with the onion he really supports neither your nor Stevens' positions.

It was a practical decision. The movie is only funny if she keeps the baby, so she keeps the baby.

Your insight into the film is pretty spot-on, but I have to disagree that a "typical young, upwardly-mobile, apparently-secular female professional who gets pregnant from a one-night stand with a loserish guy is a prime candidate to get an abortion."

Had Alison not had the steady, well-paying job, and the in-house support system of her sister and brother-in-law, the decision to carry the child to term would have been a lot more agonizing.

Replace "upwardly mobile" and "pregnant from a one-nigh stand with a loserish guy" with "poor and struggling" and "victim of a date rape" and I think you have a clearer candidate.

Well, I think that the dramatic decision not to have an abortion can be played in a lot of different ways. So, for example, if it's played as "This is just not the right choice for me at this moment, but thank goodness I and women everywhere have the choice.." that sends a whole other vibe and message.

If the implication is that aborting is, as Ross says the movie indicates, something that a "good" character ultimately wouldn't do with a clear conscience...that's different. Most choices not to abort in pop culture are couched in the terms I mentioned first.

Replace "upwardly mobile" and "pregnant from a one-nigh stand with a loserish guy" with "poor and struggling" and "victim of a date rape" and I think you have a clearer candidate.

most impregnated victims of date rape might get abortions, but most abortions are not due to date rapes. in other words, the typical impregnated victim of date rape gets an abortion, but the typical abortion doesn't have to do with date rape.

Imagine how different the movie would have been had the government forced her to carry the fetus whether she wanted to or not.

This reminded me of Stevens' 300 review:

But what's maddening about 300 (...) is that no one involved—not Miller, not Snyder, not one of the army of screenwriters, art directors, and tech wizards who mounted this empty, gorgeous spectacle—seems to have noticed that we're in the middle of an actual war.

Because of course a film depicting a war (even if it took place 2500 years ago) should really be a comment on Iraq. All responsible people know this.

It can't be much fun watching movies through ideological blinders.

Sympathetic characters in commercial American movies almost never, ever have abortions. If the plot can't accomodate a baby, then they have miscarriages, but almost never abortions.

Movies are a visual art form and they encourage viewers to use their visual imaginations. And who wants to imagine what actually happens to an unborn baby during an abortion? Nobody. It's too horrible to think about.

That's why pro-abortion campaigners insist on carrying on the debate at the highly abstract level of a woman's right to choose.

I saw the movie yesterday in Alexandria, VA. Hardly a hot-bed of right-wing pro-life sentiment.

The scene in which Alison's mother said "real baby" drew gasps and boos.

By contrast the scene in the film Breach where photos of Clinton/Reno are replaced by Bush/Ashcroft drew, at the same theater, catcalls, whoops and snickers from the audience.

Knocked Up is very funny, and maybe the most pro-life movie I've ever seen.

Steve Sailer:

I don't think that's it. I think it's a lot simpler. Pro-lifers buy movie tickets, and therefore any movie that explicitly says that abortion is a good thing is going to be at best, a minor hit like Cider House Rules that plays well only in the big cities on the coast. You just can't make a blockbuster that is pro-abortion.

To see that this is true, think about the fact that you never see an RU-486 abortion or even a morning after pill in a movie, even though those procedures aren't gruesome at all.

And I might add, it is the lack of explicit advocacy of abortion in movies-- even though it is clearly the right and moral choice for a young woman in the situation posited by "Knocked Up", that frustrates those of Dana Stevens' political persuasion. You simply have to keep the baby in the movies, even though everyone in Hollywood knows and believes there's nothing immoral about having an abortion.

Somehow I doubt that the right to choose is really all that abstract for women.

Knocked Up is almost naively pro-life: Of course Alison decided to "keep" the baby, the script suggests, because killing it would be terribly and obviously wrong, and she's not a bad person.

Naively indeed, as Focus on the Family just pointed out that a side benefit of the partial birth abortion ban is that late-term abortions are likelier now to cause uterine bleeding. That's what it means to be a bad person.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me on a puzzling thing I have noticed about the coverage of this movie. "Knocked Up" the movie, comes from "Knocked Up" the novel, by Canadian writer Rebecca Eckler. The novel was published several years ago, and though it was not a bestseller in a Harry Potter sense, I would have thought that at least a few media outlets might have sniffed out the fact that the story originated from a twenty-something hipster who worked as a columnist for the National Post, one of Canada's two national dailies, detailing all that was youthful and trivial in Toronto society.

Wherein lay the "focus groups" and "neo-conservative agenda?"

Regarding the mysterious motivations, perhaps a little light summer reading might alleviate the issue.

James,

Movie reviewers are up against union rules that regulate how often they can compare movies to their source material.

For TV shows, they're apparently allowed unlimited comparisons. For comic books, the quota looks to be "never", even for iconic characters like Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and Superman. For books, it's somewhere in between, but I suspect the LOTR coverage ate up several years' quota.

Imagine how different the movie would have been had the government forced her to abort whether she wanted to or not - which still occurs in parts of China (see the recent story on NPR/at npr.org).

Imagine how different the movie would have been in Chinese.

The MAJORITY of unplanned pregnancies by single women are aborted.

But according to Hollywood, close to zero percent of such pregnancies are aborted. (The only exception being Claire's pregnancy in Six Feet Under.)

This untrue depiction of reality gets really really annoying.

It's OK and even TRENDY to show gay people having sex (only 2% of men are gay), but god forbid Hollywood show women having abortions, even though abortions are very common and one third of women will have one.

I'll never snuff out a critical discussion by saying, 'It's just entertainment,' or 'Don't take comedy seriously' - and unlike one of the commentors above, I can't watch 300 in a vacuum. (The film wasn't history; it says more about us right now than anything else.)

tailboito has a point, though, when he cites Seth Rogan's interview - the comedy was predicated on the baby being kept, and the characters dealing on that. It's not a fear of audiences rejecting a pro-choice stance; it's a fear of audiences not laughing. (Just laugh?) If you're making a comedy about having a baby, the only thing you can do is dodge abortion as gracefully as possible to get to your premise. (Likewise, you can't ruin her life in entertainment by getting her pregnant, get her fired, put her through dramatic situations too serious to handle lightly in pure comedy.) For me, KNOCKED UP handled the adult relationships in a way unconventional and unsentimentalized enough to make the dodge worth it.

Was the dodge graceful? You don't think so here - the mother is unambiguously evil, you write, her daughter's decision a moral judgement. Though there's little evidence to support any reading of her character's motivation in the sudden cut that gets us to keeping the baby (intentionally, I suspect), in theatres I read it less as a judgement of abortion than as Alison reacting against her mother, not because she was evil for suggesting abortion, but because she was domineering.

All that said, I suppose one could ask, Why make a comedy at all, if the premise is having a baby no matter what? Is the premise simply coded pro-life?
