How The Sopranos Ends

08 Jun 2007 12:33 pm

Here's the TNR prediction thread. Here's New York Magazine's staff predictions. And here's David Edelstein:

I don't believe that Tony will die because I think David Chase will want to visit him again sometime in the future. He has too much stature to kill off just yet. Chase is too canny to make the mistake made by, say, John Updike: Having failed to channel a young would-be terrorist very convincingly, Updike is probably pacing his room at this very moment and moaning, "Why why why did I have to kill Rabbit?" ...

Tony will lose the foundation of his life. He will lose at least one member of his immediate family, although which one is difficult to guess. Anthony Jr. has become paralyzed by self-doubt and conscience, so he is already effectively out of the picture. That leaves Meadow and Carmela. I'm guessing Meadow because it would be harder to live with her death than Carmela's — and of course it would mean the end of his marriage in any case.

I, too, have come around to the view that Tony won't die - not because I think Chase wants to revisit him, but because I think the show is about the hell that wicked people make for themselves here on Earth, and killing Tony, in a way, feels like letting him off too easily. The Sopranos happily kills off its quasi-innocents (Adriana, Bobby Bacala), its unreflective sociopaths (Richie Aprile, Ralphie, and now Sil), its screwups (Vito, Christopher) and its rats (Big Pussy and a host of others), but Tony and Carmela are the only characters smart enough to understand on some level that they've damned themselves, and I think Chase will leave them alive with that knowledge. (Unless he wants to end it with Tony headed for the light - or the Finnerty family reunion - and finding his mother waiting for him.)

And I'm with Jeffrey Goldberg: Killing Meadow off is way too much of a Godfather III rip-off, and killing A.J. off just feels like a waste of time at this point. So I'm going to join Goldberg in suggesting that the finale will end with the Soprano nuclear family still intact and even with Tony back on top, in some limited sense at least; if any mob boss gets capped in the final hour, I'm betting that it will be Phil Leotardo. The show isn't about the life and death of Tony Soprano, in the end; it's about his soul, and the audience's (increasingly-vain) hope that a criminal they liked might be able to escape his pathologies and find redemption. The end of Tony's therapy, which closed off this possibility once and for all - with Melfi closing the door on him, in a scene that echoed the closing door at the end of the original Godfather - is the only ending that story needs. Killing him would be superfluous.

I believe Dr. Melfi will end up killing Tony. That would be a good twist.

I think Kevin Finnerty wakes up and realizes it was all a dream and that he's not Tony Soprano. And then he sits up in bed and leanes over to kiss his wife and it's Janice as Mrs. Finnerty! Shocking!!! A Newhart-style ending! Genius!

I vote for AJ being off-ed, Tony getting dragged to jail where we wonder if his intel on the potential "terrorists" will help him. With that, Meadow and her new boyfriend get angry, she vows to take over the family, he signs on to defend Tony.

My point is, I think a little girl power in the Mob would be a cool ending. Otherwise, it's just all the ladies crying of the death of the family which I think doesn't do the show justice.

Fuck Tony .paris hilton rules

As the snow begins to fall on the safe house, we pan out to reveal a boy shaking a snow globe. That boy is, naturally, Tommy Westphall.

Who the fuck is Paris Hilton?

I do think Tony dies, because I think Chase wants to be free of him. But the most contrarian ending of all would be for Tony to turn himself in and repent.

It is all very well to go for humor and make the most outlandish prediction possible, and a "deus ex machina" is possible (if unlikely), so all theories about FBI protection or terrorism are too undeveloped to be actual plot lines.

I think the terrorism thing was just Chase's way of putting it as a backdrop for all we do, as it is, always there, but we don't know what is being planned until it happens.

The FBI thing is too weak. So far, the FBI has shown itself singularly unable to "flip" anyone in the mob. Big Pussy sleeps with the fishes, and Adriana was disposed of, with the FBI apparently none the wiser. Why would Tony think that the FBI could protect him and his family?

What we know is this. Phil is prepared to kill the mangement of Tony's family and do business with what is left. Paulie, a captain, was specifically not mentioned by Phil. He would be head of the remaining "crew" in Jersey -- not quite a boss, but a good earner who whould kick upstairs to Phil in return for not being wiped out.

Paulie knows that he missed assassination by Tony by an ace in Florida. Chase has made a point of showing us how irritated Tony is with Paulie -- he talks too much, knows too much, is past his peak "earning" years.

Paulie, for his part, has a history of playling footsie with the New York mob and has expressed his resentment at being passed over, when he has put so much money in Tony's pockets over the years. He is probably also mad about Bobby being named the heir apparent -- someone who was a figure of fun and started as Uncle Junior's driver. He is also concerned about his ability to make money. Giving them that expensive coffee maker now look like an attempt to dispell suspicion. He akso made a quick disappearance from the Bing when Silvio was shot, and he can be quite ruthless (remember when he stangled the old lady for her saving?).

We already know that New York was looking for traitors since Silvio garotted someone for being approached by New York.

Paulie was remarkably calm about Bobby and Silvio being shot. Was this the sangfroid of a gangster, or did he know that he was protected whatever happened to Tony? He made an inappropriate comment about the blonde girl with A.J. Why? Why then?

Now Phil is in hiding and cannot be found, while Tony is in a safehouse being "protected" by Paulie, who stayed even though Tony told him to go home.

I think that Paulie will kill Tony. I also think that Carmella and the kids will be hit. Phil is vengeful and still mad about Tony's cousin killing his brother even though Tony took him out with a shotgun (when Phil was on the way to torture him).

Also, Phil's girlfriend was killed unnecessarily by the Italians. So Phil may think that Tony has put two members of his family in play for revenge. Does Paulie know where Carmella is hiding? I think Carmella and A.J. will be killed, and Tony will be killed trying to warn or protect them.

Killing Meadow is to be avoided because of the lamented "The Godfather, Part III."

That is the way that I see it, assuming (never to be relied upon) that Chase sticks to the facts on the ground.

Regardless, I expect "The Sopranos" to end with a bang -- literally.

All this talk about a movie overlooks two facts: (1) the cost to reassemble the cast and Gandofini and Falco would be astronoical and (2) so many key characters have been killed off that any movie would have to be a prequel.

I agree with Mr. Gonzalez. Dr. Melfi will snap, due to years of experimenting with psychotropic samples (and not a few drug reps), and strangle Tony with ... piano wire. She stars in the next Chase opus as Mata Melfi, yoga instructor, in "Get Shrunk."

Personally, I thought "Jennifer" was precious, specious, tedious and useless. She made Tony look sane. Just my opinion.

Spoiler alert:

So, you came about as close as anyone with your, Ross. I think there was an element of the Soprano family trying to keep their family life relatively stable in the face of a really harsh world that was really uplifting, though. Tony made a hell out of his life, yes. Even here, though, there is grace to be found.

The threat of the job that tony does to provide for his family remains, of course, and they handled this brilliantly. In the last scene Chase managed to wrap his own work up with the greats brilliantly. Without saying a word he connected the Godfather and the season one hit attempt on Tony with the struggle to right a possibly doomed family. I'm sure they'll end the Wire well, but I don't think they have this kind of punctuation mark in them.

i don't have any solution but i certainly admire the problem.

Not much on my mind worth mentioning. What can I say? My life's been generally dull today. I've just been letting everything pass me by recently.

My mind is like a fog. Oh well. My life's been really dull today. Eh. Today was a total loss. I've more or less been doing nothing , but I guess it doesn't bother me.

I haven't gotten anything done. Whatever. I just don't have anything to say.
