The Cheney Primary

19 Jun 2007 10:50 am

Matt thinks it's peculiar that Fred Thompson is angling for Lady Thatcher's blessing, and suggests that "it all points to a weird quandry for the follow-the-leader party. Bush is too unpopular to be the ring everybody wants to kiss, Reagan is dead, and H.W. Bush is the incumbent's father ... So you've got Thatcher serving as a kind of ersatz symbolic leader of American conservatism." What's more interesting to me, though, is that Thompson seems to be treating Dick Cheney as the symbolic leader of American conservatism. I thought Thompson's frequent talk about the Scooter Libby case was part of his (quite savvy) stealth campaign to woo the conservative base, but in light of this passage (from that Thatcher story) it seems like part of a broader effort to position himself as Cheney's natural heir:

The campaign will also begin rolling out a slate of advisers ... Liz Cheney, the former State Department official and the vice president's elder daughter, is consulting on foreign policy. Longtime GOP guru Mary Matalin, a friend of Thompson, will help shape the campaign's message.

That would be the same Mary Matalin, of course, whose fingerprints have been all over three of the biggest right-wing fiascos of the last twenty years: George H.W. Bush's 1992 Presidential campaign, Dick Cheney's Vice-Presidency, and Threshold Books' fall catalogue.

Now, do you think that Thompson is going to ask Chaney for help in selecting a running mate? I'm all aquiver with anticipation.

Fred Thompson is the Rove lackey who will back door the amnesty bill. Notice Fred wont announce until after the 7/4 benchmark they have set for the bills signing. Fred will not announce until that settled. He is a mere puppet and an insurave policy of Rove to give millions of illgeals amnesty. Fred Thompson is a pawn.

I was enthusiastic abotu Thompson to begin with, although a bit disturbed by his 'perjury doesn't matter' approach to Libby's legal problems. I am now much more disturbed by his utterances over Libby (which are now a dealbreaker for me, being as I prefer the Rule of Law to the alternatives) and a Cheney enthusiasm is not going to change my mind any.

RepublicansAgainstFred, are you getting tired of cutting and pasting that on every comment board you can find?

Don't forget the wildly successful West 24.

Fred Thompson and Scooter Libby: I wonder if playing a DA on "Law & Order" has made him more averse to prosecutorial over-reaching. The basic plot of every episode of Law & Order for the last two or three centuries has been that the cops arrest some rich white person who is as guilty of sin, but these Park Avenue murderers are so creatively evil that there is no precise law against what they've done, so the prosecutors in the second half of the show have to concoct some preposterous new interpretation of the law so that the bad guys get what's coming to them. I imagine acting in these repetitious scripts could get on your nerves after awhile.

So, Mary Matalin, Liz Cheney and Rove protege & former US Attorney Tim Griffin? And Thompson is just getting started. Imagine what his team will look like by the time he officially announces his run.
