Romney and the War

11 Sep 2007 02:05 pm

David Freddoso:

Romney may be leaving a door open, in case he wins the nomination, to say that while America still cannot run from Iraq, he would probably not have become involved to begin with, knowing what he knows now. Such a position would be invaluable when debating Senator Clinton, who spoke out for and voted for a war that 57 percent of Americans now say was a mistake.

Future presidents, like the current one, will face agonizing choices over whether to become involved in foreign wars. For that reason, the eventual Republican nominee will be forced to answer the “hypothetical” question about this war. He may need to give an answer that many Republicans don’t want to hear.

You could take this as evidence of Romney's possible crypto-realist tendencies, or of his eye for the main political chance (or both). Either way, though, I think Freddoso's broader analysis of the political dynamic facing the GOP is pretty astute - as is his point that Newt Gingrich's latest take on the war on terror amounts to a sotto voce rejection of the original push to invade Iraq.

If Romney abandons the Iraq war after he wins the nomination, Republican voters will stay home in November '08.

(I personally don't think Romney has any real shot at winning the nomination, for what it is worth.)

Newt Gingrich's latest take on the war on terror amounts to a sotto voce rejection of the original push to invade Iraq.

Or, to put it another way, an ex post facto rationalization of history's biggest GOP screw-up.

Many American's simply don't believe they are a risk anymore for a terrorist attack now. We have made it six years since 911 pretty much without a hitch.

We have forgotten that the cost of a future attack on our soil in regards to loss of lives and treasure is likely far more than what we have lost in Iraq. We have the islamic extremists fighting us in THEIR backyard, not ours. We are drawing the fringe kooks to us from Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, et al, where we can kill them. Whether this was the intended strategy or not, it IS working--we have not had another attack on US soil since!!

The real question is whether the republican nominee can convince the moderate swing voters of this despite the media drumbeat against the war. I believe Romney alone has the articulateness and passion to pull this off.
