Your Semi-Regular Scottish Independence Update

04 Sep 2007 05:27 pm

Ben Crair makes the interesting suggestion that "historians might look back at the war in Iraq" as the catalyst for Scottish secession from the United Kingdom. But Alex Massie isn't buying.

(I'm going to be terribly disappointed, incidentally, if the push for Scottish independence ends with a boring Parliamentary vote instead of "rough wooing"-style border campaign, followed by a rematch of Culloden.)

The SNP has promised a referendum. As the Parti Quebecois has discovered, that creates a bit of a dilemma for secessionists. The referendum can only happen when they are in power, but that's when it is hardest to convince marginal voters that independence is a good idea.

Actually Culloden had nothing to do with Scottish independence! It was the result of imposing a German King on the nation, without consulting the people and the Bonnie Prince Charlie, the young Pretender(and Stuart heir) raised some clans to fight the rightful succession in 1745. It was a UK civil war - not independence - as there were clans for the German Geordie and clans for the Prince involved at Culloden in 1746. The aftermath of the battle - the last on British soil- was pretty awful for the Highland clans.

The SNP only govern in a devolved parliament altho there is a National Conversation going on at present in the hope that persuasion will at least allow a referendum to take place
