How Huckabee Wins

29 Nov 2007 02:20 pm

huckabee.jpg

"What we are fast approaching," John McIntyre writes, "is a three-man race between Huckabee, Romney and Giuliani." Meanwhile, Richelieu sketches out a potential Huckabee path to victory:

Huckabee wins the Iowa caucus (which is what would happen if the election were today). Romney is second. Rudy is third and Thompson fourth. Huckabee surges into New Hampshire and his communications skills help him ride the wave perfectly. But Romney has some success in framing the New Hampshire race as a choice between a regular Republican from the Northeast and a southern Christian conservative. He tickles New Hampshire's secret "screw Iowa" appetite and with McCain retaining some strength in New Hampshire Giuliani finds it hard to surge. The results are muddy. Huckabee narrowly wins New Hampshire by fewer than 900 votes over Romney. McCain is third, closely followed by Giuliani. Thompson is fifth and drops out.

The next week Romney narrowly beats Huckabee, now fueled by enough Internet money to run television, in Michigan. McCain runs a distant third. The media labels Huckabee's close second place finish a "win" in a state where he has no organization. Huckabee beats the wounded Romney four days later in South Carolina. McCain drops out after a second disappointing third place finish, narrowly ahead of Giuliani, whose campaign announces they are making a final make or break stand in Florida, as they have always claimed in their brilliant Master Plan. Seeing Romney as his main opponent in Florida for the regular Republican vote, Giuliani uses his final cash on hand to launch a very tough television attack on Romney, featuring former Massachusetts governor and Rudy supporter Paul "DeNiro" Cellucci. McCain endorses Rudy. Romney interjects another $5 million in personal funds into his campaign and launches a blistering TV counterattack on Rudy. Ten days later, Huckabee wins the Florida primary, dominating north Florida and showing surprising strength in Pinellas, Orange, and Broward counties. Romney finishes second. Rudy, now lagging in every February 5 state poll except New York, drops out, refusing to endorse either remaining GOP candidate. On February 5, Huckabee sweeps, losing only Connecticut, Utah, and Delaware to Romney, who then leaves the race.

The general scenario makes sense (in long shot sort of way, obviously), but as to the details, I just can't see Huckabee, momentum or no, scraping out a victory in New Hampshire. That said, I don't think he needs to win in New Hampshire to stay competitive; what he needs, as the Cardinal's broad sketch suggests, is for both Romney and Rudy (or one of the two, plus McCain) to keep whaling on one another, and largely leaving him alone, till Florida and perhaps even beyond. I'm with Ramesh; I think Giuliani beats Huckabee in a two-man race, and I think that Romney does as well. Which means that Huckabee can only hope to win if both the current front-runners stay in and beat each other up in the hopes of being the last man standing - which, fortunately for him, they're both deep-pocketed and ambitious enough to do.

It's interesting that the Huck's rise coincides with Rich Lowry's provocative piece in the latest NR comparing Barack Obama to Jimmy Carter. As far as their skimpy resumes and "too good for politics" political styles go, the Lowry parallel is persuasive. As far as political trajectories, though, it’s Huckabee who has the more obvious Carter Redux thing going on: A pious, folksy, no-name Southern governor who rises steadily in the polls when all the putative front-runners turn out to be much more vulnerable than anyone expected.

Of course, given that Carter was the last and weakest President of the long liberal ascendancy, I don’t expect that this parallel would make anyone on the Right more comfortable with the Huck.

And so why don't Romney and/or 9iu11iani direct some of their ever-building venom toward Huckabee? (There's plenty of fodder there, btw.)

Because each one is eyeing him as their VP, that's why.

There is no way that Huckabee will win New Hampshire. The people of New Hampshire are too smart to fall his liberal undisciplined economic ways.

I just can't see it happening. Then again, I don't see Huckabee winning Iowa either.

I think Mike Huckabee will continue to keep the politics clean. People actually like that. He is also strong on his stand against illegal immigration, the 2nd Amendment, Abortion, and Cutting Taxes. These are the issues Conservatives care about. I hope Hillary gets the nomination from the Democrats because nothing will drive voters to the polls more than a woman trying to be President.

I know people who never vote and don't care that are registering right now because of Hillary. They Don't want her. If Huckabee goes against Hillary, I predict the first landslide in a very long time.

Rudy and Mitt are turning on each other because they're having a tough time finding dirt on the preacher. Maybe there isn't any dirt.

"Of course, given that Carter was the last and weakest President of the long liberal ascendancy,..."

Before him, Nixon/Ford for 8 years. Before that, Kennedy/Johnson for 8 years. Before that, Eisenhower for 8 years.

24 years before Carter was elected, FDR/Truman for 16 years.

Any 'long liberal ascendancy' in presidential terms was over long before Carter was elected.

Huckabee's rise in polls of Iowans may be just what the doctor ordered for Romney, in similar fashion to how Obama's rise among Iowan Democrats benefits Hillary: in both cases expectations are helpfully adjusted downwards. It would probably be disastrous for Romney were he to lose by eight or nine points to Huckabee in Iowa if that's not what the polls are predicting. But should Romney enter Iowa with the polls predicting a second place finish to Huckabee, the latter's victory wouldn't necessarily cause the Mittster huge problems.

My advice to Romney: ratchet up the TV spots in Iowa emphasizing your record for fiscal conservatism and your (new) hardline approach to immigration. The spots will be designed to hit Huckabee in his vulnerable areas, but don't mention him by name (you might need him as a running mate, after all, and you don't want to stoke up any more anti-Mormon animus amongst the fundies than you're already dealing with). You might also want to consider tying your expertise in venture capital and business creation with a pitch to Iowans focusing on energy independence. Huck can't match your new economy leadership bonafides. Also, don't be afraid to feature your lovely, all-American looking family in your spots. Do your best to whittle Huck's lead down as much as possible in Iowa. If you manage to prevail, Huck's done. If you manage merely to exceed expectations, you're still in pretty good shape. Meanwhile, starting in, say, mid-December, absolutely UNLOAD on Giuliani with negative ads in the NH/Boston media market. Focus on Kerrik and mistressgate. Make SURE you dispatch Rudy at the time of the NH primary. You can't waste the opportunity to hit your most dangerous competitor hard in a battlefield where you have a decisive advantage: after all, the inevitable "back at ya" attacks Rudy will mount won't be as effective as yours, because it won't be possible for him to paint horns on you to voters (including lots of ex-Bay Staters) who feel they already know you quite well. Anyway, a (say) fourth or fifth place finish in Iowa for Rudy followed by a (say) third or fourth place finish in NH basically ends the New Yorker's campaign, and effectively means its you against Huck for the nomination.

The highlight of the evening came when a YouTube questioner asked Huckabee about capital punishment: "What would Jesus do?"

Anderson Cooper repeated the question, and Huckabee answered "Jesus was way too smart to run for public office."

Too funny.

Huckabee has the quick-wit and the common sense and the ability to articulate his positions.

Beyond any issues, people like Huckabee because he seems like a genuinely nice, honest guy. That goes a long way with the American voter. I can't possibly be the only person in a America who felt he gave the most favorable impression at the debate last night. Watch his numbers surge in the coming weeks, once more and more people get to know him.

Huckabee would do well to tlak to Ron Paul and to announce quickly his intention of making Paul his running mate.

It would give some good numbers to Huckabee and give us a solid conservative team that could challenge any Demoocrat.

The problem with the rest of the Republican field is that they have no credibility.. They change their positions with the wind... It's sort of like some of these American Idol contestants that try to win America with their Christian values.. then we find out later that we as the TV was manipulated... perfect example gay man, RJ Helton. joshzz

@ joshzz:

Now THERE'S an idea: a Huckabee-Paul ticket is the sort of thing I could really get behind. Too bad their big-vs.-little approaches to government would probably bring them to kill each other before they found a middle ground.

My question, though, is why nobody else has bothered to remark on the guy in the bottom right of the photo ...

Obviously Huckabee and Paul would be the ultimate duo to beat out the pot smoking, over political, tedious democrats...

How foolish is McCain... yea I surmise that the troops enjoy not watching their children grow up... divorcing spouses... Oh yea quite positive that the troops want to remain there where there is no fight worth being there for...

Rudy and Mitt those guys would make Americans look like jejune neaderthals... why take that chance? They couldn't hold their selves
for more than ten minutes...

Huckabee is the only one running worth a nickle. The rest have no personal convictions, they just say what they think will get them elected, they want to be president for personal prestige, ONLY.

The fact that be doesn't have much money is a plus, I hope voters recognize it. It means he's independent, the special interest don't own him. Hope he stays broke and voters keep voting for him.

PS: I love the flat tax idea!

Seriously, these were some lame questions from the YouTubers, but they that is what the candidates had to work with. I look forward to the Rep-Dem debates where so meat is placed on the bone.

All in all, Huckabee didn't see a chance that he would be in the lead in Iowa just 4 weeks ago. Today, the numbers will be even higher. He is the only candidate that hit the heart of the American voter last night. Sincere, humble, witty, and understandable were all of his responses. Unlike the rambling of Thompson and Romney.

I believe John McIntyre is right on with his assessment of the next 4 primaries. Just 4 weeks ago I was leaning toward Thompson. That has definiely changed. Huckabee 2008 - President of the USA!

Huckabee is just like the rest of them unfortunately. The only reason no body knows it is because up until now it hasn't been worth mentioning. While he was governor of AK he took scores of personal trips on the taxpayer's dime, supported tax increases, the laundry-list of ethics violations; the only reason he doesn't have special interest money yet is because none of the special interests are wasting their time with him, not because he wouldn't accept their donations; they aren't there!

There's only one guy on that stage who has been consistent from the beginning and is NOT just saying what he thinks will get him the win (which is obvious if you watch the debates) and that is Ron Paul. So far, he has over $9.7 million raised for the 4th quarter alone from average Americans like myself. How much does Huckabee have? How much did he raise last quarter?

Huckabee is not the answer. Huckabee is politics as usual.

Let's pray pray pray that Huck makes it to the Oval Office.

It's going to have to be a miracle.

But we believers hold to miracles.

Pray pray and pray some more.

All in all I think Mike Huckabee is the best of the bunch. He is articulate, smart, witty and does not waver all over the place on what he believes.

I also think he will have one thing none of the other Rep candidates will have, the ability to work both sides of the aisle in Congress to get things done. I did not personally like Clinton, but as president no one did a better job in forming consensus, something Bush has been completely unable to do. Huck has the personality and smarts to do this and I think that will carry him into office. voters are smarter than we give them credit for.

Do you guys really have your head that far in the sand? Do you realize just how big Ron Paul's support is? Being from Indiana, I have never once seen a Rudy, McCain, Romney, Huckabee, Hunter or Tancredo bumper sticker, yard sign or any other type of promotional items for these guys.

On the other hand, I've seen 1 Hillary and 1 Obama sticker (no yard signs or anything else). If you drive through Indianapolis, you would think that Ron Paul was the only person running for office. His signs outnumbered the signs for our Mayor's race.

Please don't believe the polls when they say Ron Paul only has 4% or whatever single digit percentage they throw in our face. His support is huge and is only going to continue to grow. His rallys draw more people and his fundraising is the best in the GOP. Are we to believe the numbers they are giving us? Is Mike Huckabee really THAT much different than the other candidates?

Did anyone see the open letter to Americans in the USA Today on the 21st? What would drive a man to spend over $85,000.00 for a one shot ad to bring attention to Ron Paul? Paul's message of personal liberty...can you REALLY argue with that or will you just call him crazy?

Last night one of the "experts" said that the Trans Texas Corridor was a "figment" of Ron Paul's imagination. You were lied to when they made that claim. LOOK UP THE FACTS FOR YOURSELF! Stop being lazy and mocking what you are being told and do the research for yourself. Call me names, call me a troll or crazy or whatever but you will only prove your ignorance by doing that and the Revolution will also prove your ignorance on election day. We'll bring it...you can bet on that. When it comes to getting the word out, we bring it. When it comes to raising cash, we bring it. When it comes to organizing the masses...you cannot deny that we bring it. We'll do the same when we cast our vote.

HUCKABEE IS A JOKE! HE TRIES TO JOKE HIS WAY OUT OF TOUGH QUESTIONS!ROMNEY SHOWED THAT WHEN HE SAID"THAT MONEY YOU WERE SPENDING ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS..DOESNT BELONG TO YOU, IT BELONGS TO THE TAXPAYERS" AND HUCK...JUST LOOKED SLAM DUNKED! HUCK SEEMS TO THINK..A ONE LINER SOLVES PROBLEMS!HE SHOULD GO TO WORK WITH JAY LENO!HE ALSO JOKED ABOUT..chuck norris going down to the border and solving the problems..ha ha ha..bull!
he also wanted the the illegals to be able to vote! real conservativve, huh! the jesus joke was foolish for a baptist preacher! he could have quoted the scripture about..christ telling peter to live the law! the question he was asked was a technical, legal oriented question!terrorists, immigration, taxes, social security,import/export,
etc. are not going to be resolved by cutesy one liners! elvis

President Huckabee.

Kind of has a ring to it....

I like Huck best of the bunch.

For one, Huck is not an anti-illegal alien zealot, though nor is Rudy, and nor is Mitt. But Rudy and Mitt apparently want to seem so, despite the fact that doing so leaves each open to the hypocrisy attack. Plus, it's a little short sighted because it runs the risk of becoming anti-Hispanic, which is a completely bigoted and unacceptable position for anyone who wants to be the President and leader of all Americans.

Huck seemed completely at ease during the entire debate, especially when he was on the defense. It was a pleasure watching the arrows bounce off him. He is a truly gifted speaker, a rare specimen. As an aside, I agree with Pres. Bush about most issues and I know he's a smart guy, but listening to him speak makes me cringe. For me, it's important that the president look, act, and speak presidentially. Eloquent, confident, informed, and above the fray.

Huck is clearly the best debater of the bunch, and my guess is that it's because his habit is to always tell the truth, of which he is conveniently unashamed. It seems like he's given more thought to the issues than the other guys, too. In fact, I can't really think of anything he's said that seemed poll-driven. It seems like it's all straight from the heart.

I would have no qualms about seeing Huck as president for the next 8 years. And listening to 8 years of his press conferences and speeches. When he talks, it's reassuring, even a little calming.

Indiana
You should check out Council of Canadian's and the the Canadian Action Party. More information on the North American Union. Also Jerome Corsie's book Death of America. Also, when it was claimed that there was no secret meeting in Jasper ,that too has been debunked. Freedom of information act requests are definately a good thing. One of the objectives of the meeting was how to stress that everything had to be carried out in "stealth".

they all seem to be sales person; they just want to tell the Americans what we want to hear in order to have the sale(the vote) EXCEPT HUCKABEE, he is the only one that is consistent and he is the only one that seems to be honest, humble and a man of action and that's what we need. Romney last night at the republican debate did not know which direction to go when asked about believing
on the Bible.

President Huckabee....good lord help us. But at least this huckster wouldn't be 9ui11iani or Mitt.

And Jesus was too smart to get into politics? No, he preached living simplying and renouncing worldly possessions and power...seems that Preacher Mike forgot about that part of the Good News

Mike Huckabee is a true Conservative. But New Hampshire voters ought to like him even more for his independent streak. He doesn't toe the line. He uses his head, his heart and his experience to make decisions. He's my kind of fiscal Conservative. Cut taxes 94 times. Not only left a balanced budget but a huge surplus so that Arkansas can continue to improve roads and schools. And he achieved this as a Republican with a Democrat Congress! Impressive! Not tied to any special interest group, he is faithful to his convictions. How about that! He has convictions!

I've been a Conservative voter for almost 40 years and I know a Conservative when I see one. I'm a values voter. Mike Huckabee is a true Conservative.

Please don't believe the polls when they say Ron Paul only has 4% or whatever single digit percentage they throw in our face.

But I'm instead supposed to believe anecdotes about yard signs in Indiana?

Everybody,

Are you kidding me?!

The Huckster?! His nickname means dishonest.

He has a dreadful tax record in Arkansas that the internet media will keep out in front. East and west coast voters will not translate him into votes.

Huckabee survives only on a the weak field.

Religious inferences help a national candidate. Religious references kill a national candidate.

Has everyone forgotten his stand on the war?

This election is about the war.It is slowly becoming a moral debate and if the electorate knows they can end the war with a vote they will.

Huckabee's momentum is NOT issue based.
Thompson and Guiliani's downward momentum IS issue based.
Paul's momentum IS issue based.

I say Huck is just picking up pieces through default.

Mitt and Huck with Paul in position for the convention.

I can't believe people keep saying "all the other candidates" have no "convictions" or that they will "say whatever will get them elected." You cannot tell me McCain is not an honest person who satands up for what he believes, even when what he believes is unpopular. I'll vote for an honest guy anyday. Hillary, Edawards, Obama, Gulliani, and Romney are not honest people. Huck very well may be sincere but don't kid yourself, he could win the Republican nomination but a preacher will never will never win the general. Ron Paul is just too out of touch with the average Republican and has zero chance of the nomination. Looks like my vote is for McCain!

Here is the problem with your hypothesis: Thompson dropping out after a poor showing in the first two states. Clearly those are not focal points for the Thompson campaign, which will not have a "make-or-break" stand until South Carolina at the earliest. A Thompson presence splits southern Conservatives and will ultimately hurt Huckabee.

After all the Pundits SPINNING, and discoveries of plants were beginning, the response from the polls of real people, had Governor Huck grinning.

Huckabee won Hands down. He is the most articulate, humble, real candidate out of all of them-after all the verbal stumbles of the Bush presidency we have finally discovered someone who can communicate republican principles with wit & wisdom. McCain came out ok. Romney just got a beating..wow..definitely NOT his night. I wonder what Hugh Hewitt and all those who were so ready to give Romney the mantle of conservatism are doing after this one. HUCKABEE is a force to be contended with, and tonight he showed WHY he is on the rise in Iowa. The Underdog is poised to take a bite out of Rudy McRomney on Jan 3rd. The others were all a distant..3rd...Duncan Hunter had some ok stuff and Fred is frankly coming across as kinda like..hey man ..someone please pick me for VP so I can sport my hot wife around DC. And what was with the INQUISTION Style question the crackpot youtuber asked about the Bible(As if he has ever read it)(and all the man on man gay questions...and the rebel flag...weird..there had to be some better questions that those...but wow did the gays in the military question make Romney look like a TOTAL flip flopper...what a bad night for him.

I've been watching Huckabee on Meet the Press, Chris Wallace, Glenn Beck, and tonight on MNBC Hardball, and think he is the most logical and consistent candidate among the group. He will NOT get sucked into attacking other candidates, responding "let's let the voters decide that". His ease with public speaking, thanks to his radio broadcasting experience, is serving him well. And it's true that he is a guy the average person can relate to. I've examined his YouTube answers to issues, and they are great. His approach to taxes is the first sensible thing I've heard on the subject. And I think he will win huge support from his straightforward way of sidestepping stupid/useless questions from debate hosts and ...have you ever seen a more lame agenda than the debates this year? Who picks these questions???
I've talked to many ordinary people who can't relate to Mitt or Rudy. I love McCain's credibility and passion re Iraq and our troops but he stumbled bad on the immigration issue. Thompson doesn't seem very strong on any specifics, probably hasn't gotten to that part in his campaign yet! Paul is a classic 3rd part candidate whose party will never back him.
Watch Huck's YouTube segments...they are really excellent. Those of you who think he's a big spender will learn a few things about how the Arkansas tax increases came to be.

Romney flip-flops more than the damn Democrats. His so called "convictions" depend to much on which way the wind is blowing. How many times is his mantra "I was wrong" going to play? At first it's a refreshing bit of honesty (?) but hearing it too many times I question his ability to lead.

The the polls say Rudy is a viable candidate. I don't see it. Most of the online groups are discussing everyone BUT Rudy. No doubt he has serious credentials but from what I'm seeing online I just don't see him lasting long at all.

There is a growing belief that some of the really well-off candidates are out of touch with the middle class. That is where Huckabee is going to shine. I thought it was clear in the first debate that he would be a force in this election. At the very least I hoped so. See how it all plays out. BTW What I can't believe is the support Ron Paul is getting....is that scary or what? He won't know when to quit. Anyone want to bet he's going to be the spoiler?

A quick google on Huckabee's record in Arkansas shows overwhelming evidence that preacher Mike is cut from the same liberal/neocon cloth as Romney and Giuliani.

All three believe that the rule of law is for other people. Their ends justify their means even when their means involve trashing the Constitution and the people that constitution was created to protect.

They all believe in the liberal application of the force of government power to achieve their personal political and ideological goals...just like a good Democrat should.

These three can only be labeled 'conservative' by some perverted stretch of imagination.
Jahfre Fire Eater

Good evening to all serious voters who want and demand a serious President to lead this great nation of the United States of America.

Just from a logical viewpoint, Gov. Mike Huckabee is the front runner for the Preidential candidate for the United States of America. His honest, sincere, down-to-earth, logical, witty, conservative, realistic, conviction based, no-non-sense, Christian values, unwavering, consistent, experienced, educated, decisive, truthful, energetic, Americanism, persuasive, genuine, non-conformist, full of excellent and proven ideas of how to improve America for the Americans instead of pocketing money for the federal government, love for Americans and America and mankind, make him the ONLY Republican Candidate and the ONLY Presidential Candidate that is legitimately able to run this Great Nation under God and work hand-in-hand with both parties of the Congress to make this Great Nation more than it has been for decades and allow that momentum to continue after his two terms as President of the United States of America.

Gov. Mike Huckabee is the right choice, the logical choice, the American choice and the BEST choice that we as Americans have to choose from to become our next Commander in Chief and President of this Great Nation.

We as American's are so Blessed by God for the Freedom to live in Peace from terror from other outside sources that we have become so greedy in our pursuit of money and wealth that we have forgotten about the blood and guts that were sacrificed for our freedom by our forefathers and our men and women in our Armed Forces serving and sacrificing their lives today to preserve our freedom today by serving the American Nation in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world to ensure that the fight does not exist on our own soil, but that we protect our soil from the terror by taking the fight to the terrorist's soil instead.

Gov. Mike Huckabee is the only right chooice for all of America for a President that is steadfast and represents All of the citizens of America.

If I could, I would participate in Gov. Mike Huckabee's campaign and assit him in anyway I could to ensure that he is our next President of the United States of America.

God Bless Gov. Mike Huckabee, his campaign, his staff and all citizens of America.

I really enjoyed the responses from Huckabee. He was able to articulate all the positions, which I agreed with, with a sense of humor that carries a candidate well in working with both sides of the political spectrum. Look at Bill Clinton, he was a lousy president. But I've got to give him credit, he could bull with the best of them. The difference between Bill and Huck is that Bill was a liar- Huck is honest.

Furthermore, it would be a breath of fresh air to have someone in office that was poor, but paid for his education and worked his way up life's latter instead of having everything given to him-like virtually everyone else in political office!

P.S. I wonder how many of these bloggers don't like Huckabee because he's a Christian?

I hope he goes all the way to the WHITE HOUSE!!!!!! for once it may remain that way-no thanks to Bill!!!

Ron Paul is the GOP's version of Howard Dean with a dash of conspiracy theory. Yard signs and buckets of internet money raised and a core of passionate young supporters simply do not win nominations.

Mitt Romney is the GOP's version of John Kerry, but phonier. Every time he opens his mouth you can see his brain trying to pick the words that the GOP base most wants to hear. At the debate last night he couldn't give a straight answer to save his life.

Fred Thompson is a mediocre actor and a worse presidential candidate. Last night was supposedly his best performance? Who could even understand half of his convoluted answers?

John McCain may still have some straight talk left in him, but his best chance at the White House was 2000. Dubya's minions slimed McCain into submission in the 2000 primaries, and now McCain is asking voters to endure four more years of the disastrous Bush foreign policies? Give me a break.

Tom Tancredo is the GOP's version of Dennis Kucinich, except whinier and more narrow minded. The immigration issue helped sink the GOP's majority rule in 2006, and that's the issue he expects to get him elected? Please.

Duncan Hunter is a power hungry turd with a massively inflated image of himself. All he does is brag about his imaginary achievements in Congress. At least Tancredo has a signature issue, Hunter has diddly squat.

Rudy Giuliani, as the YouTube questioner nailed, is trying to ride his 9/11 popularity all the way to the White House. Half his support is based on name recognition. He is already fading in all the early primary states.

That leaves . . . Mike Huckabee. He has charm, charisma, sincerity and speaking ability. He may have some wacko wingnuts beliefs but he hides or packages them extremely well.

If GOP voters are smart, they will nominate Huckabee. As a hardcore Dem who wouldn't vote for a Republican for dogcatcher, I hope the GOP nominates ANYONE BUT Huckabee. He is the ONLY candidate on the GOP side that concerns me.

To be honest, I am worried about the choices for the GOP. There is nobody that stands out as a true leader. I had hopes for Thompson. The only thing he has going for him is his wife. He does not stand strong on any issues that concern the American people. Ron Paul seems to be a standup guy, but I do not believe that the GOP would get behind him. I hear that Huckabee is surging forward, but I have not seen enough about him on the net to know where he stands on important issues. I want to vote for a candidate that is serious about overhauling our c r a p p y tax system & shutting down our border with Mexico. Can we deport 15+ million illegals? ABSOLUTELY!!!!! If it is impossible to get a job, they will beat a path back to Mexico carrying their saved earnings. Cut off their jobs? How? Easy as pie. Being hard on employers that hire them. How about say.... a $100,000 fine per illegal hired. If you can't pay, your business is confiscated & assets sold off to pay the fine. Let a few stockholders take a financial beating because of hiring illegals. Then see what happens. Regardless of who is running for President on the GOP ticket, I am voting for them. I am horrified thinking about Hillary care. Barak scares me even more. He reminds me of Jimmy Carter. Weaken our military until we couldn't whip the Solomon Islands. Nothing against them LOL. Just drawing a comparison of sorts. Maybe getting carried away, but scared of what the Dems have to offer. High taxes, socialized medicine, Marxism, Jobs beating a path out of America. The one thing that gets me is that NONE, NOT A SINGLE ONE, of the Republican candidates has stepped forward to embrace the Fair Tax plan. Booting the IRS is a wonderful idea. Dumping ALL other taxes & instituting a consumption tax is a wonderful idea. I can't believe the dems aren't supporting it. The precious poor will completely be off the hook tax wise. The filthy rich will pay out the arse when they buy a $100,000 sports car, a yacht, $10,000,000 home, etc. Tousist will chip in when they visit to spend on vacations. With no corporate taxes, goods become cheaper. How many of you really believe that corporations pay taxes? Way too many I am sure. They merely collect taxes. They just roll taxes in to the price of goods. Take out all of the built in taxes & goods become cheper. suddenly America is a competitive place to manufacture in once again. It is time for America to become GREAT again. We can only do that with a great leader. He needs to step forward &stand head & shoulders above the rest. A great leader does not have to be heard. He will be noticed for his greatness. He will not need to tell people he is a leader. WE THE PEOPLE WILL RECOGNIZE IT!!!!!

their egos are both too big for either one to admit that Huckabee is a threat.

Ron Paul: won't get the nomination, but he is my choice.

huckabee: likeable, but is he a closet religious fanatic? Didn't Bush say God told him to invade iraq? 'SEPARATION of church and state.'

Guiliani:uh, NO!... as a New Yorker, let me say that this whole immigration issue; the new boogie man that gay marriage was 4 years ago (brown is the new pink) is nonsense.

There are 18 million people in manhattan, 2 million are probably illegal. Are they taking your jobs?
so , you have a degree in selling mangos on the highway and making sushi, but good american mango sellers and sushi chefs are out of a job now?
Have the political machines convinced you that Mexicans are terrorists?
get serious.

Romney: embarrassing

Thompson: rambling incoherent old guy

mccain: past his prime, sad.

hmmm I would vote for an Paul, Obama.

Interesting scenario, but there's no way New Hampshire voters will support Huckabee -- he increased spending faster in Arkansas than George W. Bush did in DC.

The scenario also leaves out the candidate who is raising the most money in the fourth quarter and who has the most volunteers (Ron Paul), so what credibility does it have?

Dr. Ron Paul's campaign cleared $ 10 million
this morning.
The RNC heirarchy would not initially recognize
Ronald Reagan in the early days of his presidential candidacy either.
RON PAUL! RON PAUL! RON PAUL! He will do
just fine picking his own running mate.

I have just finished reading comments from many people concerning Huckabee and his run for the white house. He is articulate as most preachers are, but he is not smart enough to run this country. His overall tax positions are extremely liberal. His contetion that he cut taxes in Arkansas is a bunch of bull.In his first session he did support tax decreases, from then on pushed for numerous increases. Whether or not they were needed for good things, the fact is overall he raised them. To say otherwise is simply lying. Check his record on the Wayne Dumond case, reminds one of the Willy Norton ads of another campaign. He is not a conservative except on abortion and same sex marriage. He fought conservative legislators who tried to get a handle on illegal immigrantion, ridiculed them by making smart ass jokes about thier character. I could go on and on with issues such as the above.

J. Timler,
AK is Alaska. AR is Arkansas. Huckabee is the Governor of the latter.
I stil support Dr. Paul, but you gotta admit that Huckabee came across as the most likeable candidate, even if his positions leave much to be desired.

Huckabee is just another huckster - with smooth, updated packaging for the same old fundamentalist snake oil. That's not going to play outside of a place like Arkansas. It might work in Iowa, but in the rest of the country the people know they're electing a President, not an ayatollah. We have just lived through eight years of a President who takes his marching orders straight from God.

I met Gov. Huckabee several years ago when I lived in Little Rock. He really is the nice, humble, funny, caring and articulate man that you see. I have voted Democratically since forever because I have never liked the Repubs "what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine" attitude nor that their opinion is the only one(the only correct one.) Being a woman, Hillary naturally was my choice. However, the more I listen to the Guv speak, the more I like him. Plus, he is in a rock band and his wife is cool as hell !! (sorry Rev!) GO GUV HUCKABEE!!!!!!!

Not smart enough to run the country??!!! Are you kidding me?? Since when (in the last seven years) does being smart count??

Huckabee is basically an SOP Baptist with no business running in the national POTUS election, given his near complete lack of DOD experience -- where "commanding" the state National Guard ain't running Central Command, sorry.

McCain remains the clear choice, in either party.

There are no good candidates on either side. Biden may be the exception but he's too intelligent for the common folk to elect. He'll end up being Hillary's Secretary of State.

You Republican bible thumpers better start realizing that America has had enough of your insanity. The last eight under this idiot has driven home that point.

Do today's Republicans really want the religious right to have a say in the government again? When will americans get on to serious issues such as health care, economy, education, foreign policy, instead of the bible, abortion, and what flag should or should not be flown. I really think americans deserve better government, not a pro life, ex minister who believes in a sky fairy.

You wanna know whats funny, isn't the Anti-Christ supposed to use his Christian ideals and background to get into a position of power? Have any of you ever wondered why we have the separation of church and state? It is so these hypocritical preacher folk don't use their "Love for God," to get into office. Please, I DON'T GIVE A DAMN about a candidates religious background, what should it matter? For all of you saying that the country needs to be ran by someone who lives the bible and a bible banging president can help america, you are stupid. look at was has, essentially, started the majority of wars in the history of the world? RELIGION.

As for you tristram, you act like Arkansans are ignorant and stupid and can't think for themselves. I don't enjoy that comment about Arkansas. so I will ask you a few questions. Have you ever eaten Tyson brand chicken? Yes, because they serve it everywhere. Have you ever watched the Dallas Cowboys or seen the NFL Network? How about have you ever shopped at a Wal-Mart? I wonder how many of those Billionaires came from Arkansas? Wait all of them, Don Tyson, Alltell phone services, Sam Walton, Jerry Jones. Now i think they are a little less ignorant than you considering they have done something to put your years salary to shame in one day. Second of all about Arkansas, I don't believe Hucks even has that much support here. Whose name do i see in yards, bumper stickers, sidewalk chalk all around a major university, and wait at EVERY University of Arkansas Tailgate with mass amounts of people supporting him? None other than Dr. Ron Paul. I am not a deeply religious man, but I tell you every night before i go to bed I pray for my father in Iraq, and I pray to God, Allah, Yahweh, WHATEVER you call your god, That Ron Paul gets elected in 2008. Ya'll say you just see people trying to say whatever they can to get in the office.

This is for Nanellen, who said that Huckabee cut taxes 94 times. Tax cutting is a myth. If one tax is cut, another will increase. The use of "tax cuts" is a con game that politicians of both parties have been using for a long time. For example, when W cut tax rates a few years ago, less funds were available to the states, which meant that less funds were available to cities and towns. Therefore, property taxes on the whole increased. Just an example but that's what really does happen.

Perla should leave the pot refs alone. You write as though you just hit the bong!

The big problem is that we all would like our next president to be a cross between Abraham Lincoln and St. Paul. That ain't gonna happen. I don't see any candidate, Democrat or Republican, that I really like. I never thought we should have invaded Iraq, but now that we are in there, we can't just walk away from it. We broke it. Now we've got to try to fix it. My problem is looking for the candidate that will do the least additional harm there. Who might that be? McCain thinks the whole thing is great. Clinton and Obama will bail out as soon as possible. If it is possible, and that's not sure, we need to help establish some order and then back out slowly with all our guns still out, still loaded, still cocked. I don't think building as huge embassy complex, as we are doing (is it the largest in the world?) makes any sense at all. Let's hope that somebody turns up that can accomplish some of this. And let's hope the American public can recognize that person.

I'm a registered Democrat who has been following the Republican debates. Huckabee is someone who I am actually considering voting for. Most of his stances are acceptable to me and he's a likeable guy.

NO ONE will drop out early. With so many primaries so early they will hunker down and hope a miracle happens. Maybe in mid to late February we will see the losers drop out and the final primaries will decide the matter.

This country is stupid, no question of that, but as dumb as it is, no Repubilican will come close to winning the election. Can't wait!

Huckabee need not win N.H.
Actually no one needs to win N.H. It's almost a non-factor.
Whoever wins (first OR second) both Iowa & S.C. becomes officially the non-Guiliani candidate and will have 50%-50% chance winning over Guiliani.
That person will be Huckabee and not Romney for many reasons, but primarily due to the trust factor.
And whether Huckabee wins or not depends on how fast Romney (helps MH), Thompson (helps MH), McCain (helps RG) and Ron Paul (helps MH) drops out. (for all practical purpose Thompson has already been dropped)
It's that simple.

Yes, Huckabee was the governor of Arkansas (AR).

He joked that Arkansas was a "little banana republic and he was the dictator".
Just think of the one liners he could come up with as president.

Of course he is comfortable speaking in public. He is a Baptist preacher and has past experience as a radio announcer.

I tell you one thing, I will NEVER vote for any Democrat that has no regard for human life. God created us and only he can take us from this world. Anything else(ABORTION) is MURDER!! We need someone that has a strong love for others, the way JESUS did and still does!! BC.

JD - Re: the Tax myth. . . .

True dat, JD . . . the problem with hardcore conservative ideology is the same as the problem with ANY fundamentalist ideology . . . . it's so absolutist that it ignores all other factors besides what it holds sacred which essentially is to cut any and all taxes. Sure, cutting taxes will rev up the economy under certain circumstances but the canard that low taxes always increase treasury income is pattently false. If we take that argument to its ridiculous conclusion then 0 taxes would be the optimal tax!

They also say we should cut spending but do they? No! It's all spend spend spend with money you we don't have. This has driven the devaluation of the dollar which is a hidden tax. Goods and services cost more and that's the same as raising taxes too.

Meanwhile Bush and company don't know what happened to half of the 400 billion already spent on "rebuilding" Iraq. Most of the money they CAN account for went for shoddy construction of buildings that are too dangerous to inhabit, but there is no legal authority to prosecute the no-bid contractors who basically took taxpayers money and betrayed this country's trust and dishonored our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line.

When we can get rid of the cronyism of the Republican cabal that is in power now this country can begin to piece together a future for itself, but not before. Not saying I love the Democrats, but you can't go for someone like Ron Paul, although I love the guy to death, who will not be able to accomplish anything as president because he would be way to combative, or Huckabee because he is hung up on "values" issues and is just not presidential material. If I had to go Republican I would chose Romney, or maybe McCain, simply because Giuliani has proven that he is a shortsighted crook who would simply use his position to build a cabinet of incompetent, flattering sycophants, sort of like Bush now, only potentially worse.

Conservative voters have very limited choices this election. Huckabee or Ron Paul do not have a chance to win. Against Hillary Clinton, they certainly will not win. Only Rudy Guliani has even a chance of being a winner. McCain has severly damaged his reputation on immigration and campaign finance which was a great sham. It makes no sense to win the primaries and then, practically hand the election to Hillary Clinton.
I'll definitely vote for whoever is the candidate of the GOP against Hillary Clinton. If people do not vote or back a third party candidate, they will hand this election to Hillary Clinton and the liberals will rejoice over the fact that their extemely liberal positions will definitely be the staple of her policy decisions. The conservatives will lose out big time when that happens but, will have themselves to blame for it!

Maybe you're right. The NH'rs saw right through Bush's bullshit in 2000. Unfortunately the rest of Red State America fell for his "compassionate Conservatism" bullcrap and we watched as the country was betrayed, the surplus was gobbled up by the uber-wealthy, our men and women died, our people were disgraced, and the Constitution was torn to shreds.

Romney or McCain are the least scary of the Republican hopefuls. I don't like Romney's personality, and some of the hawkish pandering he has done is ridiculous. But essentially he strikes me as the smartest, besides Giuliani, who is certifiably insane. Who cares if he is a Mormon . . . people tend to believe whatever their parents believed.

Which is why I am proudly atheist. Christian, Muslim, Jew, Mormon, it's all the same crap to me.

"There is no way that Huckabee will win New Hampshire. The people of New Hampshire are too smart to fall his liberal undisciplined economic ways."

"Conservative voters have very limited choices this election. . . . . .Only Rudy Guliani has even a chance of being a winner. "

Conservative voters don't have a choice because their ridiculously narrowminded views on things. They are led like sheep to ignore the structural problems in the economy

The business community, traditionally supporters of the Republicans before they became dominated by loonies obsessing over gay marriage and school prayer (the most inconsequential wedge issues imaginable) are running away in droves. Why do you think you have people like Romney paying for their own campaigns? People who have invested money in their own corporations know that Republicans are just out to throw money down the toilet, destroy the middle-class and leave this country full of poorly-educated children.

Even in the Senatorial campaigns, Republicans are trying to get people to run who have enough of their own money to pay for their own campaigns.

Face it, conservatives, you have a terrible record of holding people accountable for their actions. Well, except for Democrats of course! Intelligent people, be they conservative or liberal, realize that chronyism and incompetency eventually are bad for business. It has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. . . this holds true for Chavez or Bush. Blow jobs in the Oval office, although embarrassing, don't have the same negative effect as, say, borrowing trillions of dollars from China, or starting pointless wars that drag on indefinitely at great loss in terms of lives and treasure. Yet have any of the Republican candidates held Bush and Rice to task? Huh . . . yeah right!

Here's a novel concept for beating Hillary; get your own house in order. Come up with a plan for dealing with Iraq.

In the words of Lee Iacocca . . . "Lead, follow, or get out of the way."

I don't see why there isn't more press about why liberals would rather face ANYONE but Dr. Ron Paul. Much as we'd like politics to be positive, it is in fact ruled almost entirely by negatives. For instance, what's the biggest negative the Republican Party is facing in 2008? Iraq - a staggering 70% of people favor IMMEDIATE withdrawl from Iraq. Who is the only candidate that doesn't have that negative? Dr. Paul, who advocates using those trillions of dollars to secure our border (perhaps against Saudis who were 20 of the 24 terrorists in 9/11) and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure which is far more worrying than the loss of Social Security. Hm, full employment, withdrawl from Iraq and a huge boost to our economy from rebuilding our infrastructure - what Democrat wants to run against that. Hence the behavior of known liberal biased network CNN, who wants us to nominate either Guiliani or Romney - both of whose negatives are so high the copy practically writes itself!

It's so amusing watching the Ron Paulites spin their little wheels in fury about how their candidate is being "ignored" by the MSM.

Before you slather at the mouth about that "known liberal biased network CNN" (funny, all the liberal blogs have the exact opposite opinion), please tell me why Fox et al. are also not covering Ron Paul's rise?

Face it--someone who runs around talking about getting rid of the IRS, going back on the gold standard, and pulling out of the UN comes across as a nut. Which is why the media ignore him.

(I'd love to see him catch fire, if only to get his opinions more fully outlined in the media. Either Paul will have to moderate his opinions or he will segue over to being labeled as full-blown whacko.)

It should be noted that Huckabee is now in first place in Delaware, so assuming Romney would win there is probably a mistake. I agree that Huckabee will probably not be able to pick up Utah though, given the strong pro-Mormon sentiment there.

Just for the record, Huck is earning his wings as a member of the CFR. His foreign policy advisor, Richard Haas, is president of the CFR.

Huck is nothing more than a puppet for the CFR.

And so is..

Fred Thompson
Rudy Giuliani
John McCain
Mitt Romney
Hillary Clinton
Barack Obama
John Edwards
Joe Biden
Chris Dodd
Bill Richardson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo5CZvD3-QM ..in this video you will discover the agenda of these CFR candidates, and you'll find some pretty scary quotes from Huck's foreign policy advisor.
