On Rudy Giuliani, of course. Yuval Levin has the goods.

The "flip-flopper!!1!!" charge, when invoked against politicians, is for the most part a pretty irritating way to avoid discussing substantive issues. Using it against institutions is even stupider. Giuliani has gone way, way out of his way since that Dec. 2001 editorial to treat 9/11 as a license to print money and get camera time. It's not a surprise that any person, or institution, might have different views about him now than then.
The real secret behind Rudy's success among New York liberals, as their mayor YET his failure among them as a national leader… is obvious. You can clean up crime in OUR neighborhood but not across the country. You can clean up pornography in OUR times Square but not across the country. You can get tough with entrenched liberal interests in OUR city, but not across the country. It’s like some perverse NIMBY-ism.
Were these editorials written by the same person? If not, making hay out of the changed perspective is kind of stupid - the editorial page of the newspaper is not supposed to speak with one unchanging voice.

I thought we all agreed that 9/11 made everybody temporarily insane.
