The Conservative Crack-Up

01 Feb 2008 12:39 pm

I trust the Obama campaign is sending this to every undecided Democrat on their email list:

That skank gets way too much attention.

All the talking heads/ pundits/ and radio hosts are going bonkers with anti-McCain diatribe’s.

Laura Ingram this morning was playing clips of McCain in every sort of odd contortion.

It is like some weird last minute rally for Romney (who is no conservative any way)

This will make it hard for them to spin on a dime and support him this fall, but will make it easy for them to hold his feet to the fire once elected.

McCain is a conservative who is (as a legislature) willing to cut deals and get things done. He would make a great conservative president.

The conservative talking head are about to learn that they are not leaders – just entertainers.

That's fantastic...Ann Coulter is a useless nincompoop, but I'll take her when she bashes McCain and Clinton in the same fell swoop.

Not that there was ever in any doubt, but Ann Coulter is a moron.

Trying to care. Trying. Trying. Failing. Failing. Caring failed.

The one great thing is that on FoxNews' website link to her appearance, they managed to thumbnail a frame of her appearance in which she looks exactly like the kid from Mask. The intern who did that was probably awfully proud of himself. The media giveth and the media taketh away.

As a Democrat, I'm an outsider on this one. Can Thomas R or somebody tell me what the heck this is all about?

I don't grasp the McCain hatred to begin with. And I certainly don't get whether this pro-Hillary stuff is some sort of misdirection on Coulter's part, or a manifestation of psychosis, or something really well-considered that I just don't get.

Elvis,

I think the Coulter thing is pretty easy. As ever, she is simply trying to be provocative. "Oooh, I hate John McCain and I hate Hillary? How could I stick it to both of them at the same time? And have everyone talk about me in the meantime?" Just about the only sure thing about Coulter's vote is that you know she'll do it illegally.

Yet another example of the naiveté and stupidity of conservatives who will find themselves in the political wilderness with the next two or three Supreme Court appointees coming from the hard left. They would rather whine and complain about McCain than face the clear reality that he has likely won a hard-fought primary campaign and is the only Republican capable of beating Clinton or Obama.

Peter Leavitt writes: "Yet another example of the naiveté and stupidity of conservatives who will find themselves in the political wilderness with the next two or three Supreme Court appointees coming from the hard left."

How about a moratorium on con drones referring to dead-on mainstreamers like Hillary as "hard left"? There's barely a "hard left" left in this country, and they sure won't be picking any Supreme Court nominees.

What we do have is a large far-right contingent which has totally lost its collective marbles.

Semi-related: I don't get the whole "rally for Romney" thing going on in conservative circles right now in response to McCain's emergence that Fitz mentioned.

Romney's record as governor is almost as liberal as McCain's as a senator in a lot of ways, is it not? And at least McCain's a know commodity. Romney's transformation from centrist governor of a liberal state to assembly line conservative would, I should think, have a lot of real conservatives wondering just how serious the guy is. It seems like a lot of regular voters feel this way (hence McCain's status as frontrunner), but it seems like the punditry is kinda going the other way.

I guess maybe the ideologues out there are just happy to hear a guy saying the things they want to hear.

Mitt wasn't notably conservative while he was governor here in MA until he started openly running for president and hopped on the hate fags/love fetuses bandwagons. (He was barely a presence at all, in fact.)

Now he's out there hating fags and loving zygotes and promising MORE TORTURE, which seems to be the new Golden Triangle for wackaloon cons.

This is why the Coulters, Hannitys, Limbaughs and so forth prefer Mitt. It's really not that hard to figure out. McCain isn't a liberal at all, he's just not a completely out-of-control sadistic asshole, unlike the aforementioned "pundits" and the current president and VP.

I haven't remotely liked Coulter since 2001, (It seems like in the 1990s she had a few appearances on "Politically Incorrect" I kind of liked, but I might be mixing her up with someone else)

Anyway short-answer she's a kook and I don't care much what she says. Longer answer she's self-admittedly about partisanship and destruction. What's important to her is smashing the things she feels endangers what she values. That means smashing Muslims, the Left, etc. McCain has shown he can work with those on the Left. He is not as interested in destroying Islam, expelling immigrants, or keeping America polarized. This is bad for her as America being as polarized as possible is her bread-and-butter. Hillary holds the promise of being someone she can relate to. A woman who believes in smashing her enemies and keeping America polarized. A woman who like her may well be a b..

Anyway that's my theory.

The "conservatives" such as Coulter hate McCain because he calls them on their immorality: torture, environment, corruption in politics. It's that simple. Other than the genuinely penitent, no one enjoys having their darkness exposed.

That's not to say McCain is perfect. His righteousness too often becomes self-righteousness, and a blind spot: witness his fibs about Romney. But, unquestionably, here is a politician, when it comes to the big things, who asks himself: what is right? That's worth voting for, in my opinion...even for a moderate Democrat such as myself.

Thomas R writes: "What's important to her is smashing the things she feels endangers what she values. That means smashing Muslims, the Left, etc. McCain has shown he can work with those on the Left. It's a very good theory as far as her view on McCain goes, but she's just kidding on Hillary. She's not going to campaign for her. She sure would like to see Hillary beat McCain, though, because (as you astutely pointed out) hatred and polarization are what makes her wealthy. This is also true of Limbaugh and Hannity and Savage and so forth.

Many right-wingers like to claim that the same sort of hatemongering is present on Air America and so forth, but it simply isn't. And as for Michael Moore, "Fahrenheit 9-11" looks more accurate every day.

I haven't remotely liked Coulter since 2001, (It seems like in the 1990s she had a few appearances on "Politically Incorrect" I kind of liked, but I might be mixing her up with someone else)

Are you thinking of Barbara Olsen? Also blonde, conservative, and a Politically Incorrect panelist. She died on the flight that al Qaeda crashed into the Pentagon, so that would also explain why, if you liked Olsen and were confusing her with Coulter, you "stopped liking Coulter" in 2001.

I think that the most telling point in this exchange is the disagreement Ms. Coulter has with Sen. McCain's stance on torture, as opposed to Sen. Clinton's.

To wit: McCain has spoken out most vociferously against torture and for detainee rights (as opposed to "Double Gitmo" Mitt, and "I have no strong feelings about this one way or the other" Hillary). Coulter hates that (Coulter has argued in defense of actual, literal torture of suspected terrorists). In other words, Coulter says that she believes that Clinton will be more likely to torture prisoners than McCain would. Think about that. That might actually be true.

However: almost everything Ms. Coulter says is a steaming pile of contrarian, intentionally provocative bullshit designed to sell mouth-frothingly lunatic books. Maybe she sees the way the wind's blowing and is trying to pick up a new demographic?

Yeah, no one trusts Coulter, but she is the only conservative bobblehead who seems to be aware that Clinton does lean right on national security. Of course, McCain would purify the world with the blood of American GI's if he could, so I still think she's wrong on this one.

New Gallup Poll indicates the number of Republican/Republican leaners saying they'd "stay home or vote Democrat" is about the same whether Romney or McCain is the Republican candidate.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/104119/Clinton-Obama-Tied-Both-Satisfying-Democrats.aspx

However it's very slightly higher if Romney is the nominee. Although the difference is statistically insignificant.

Clinton has taken Kentucky and Obama is right there in Oregon.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive – and most likely to be decided by superdelegates – as CNN points out clearly

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/20/primary.wrap/index.html

If you’re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

Clinton Supporters too …. !

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !
