Is Patriotism a Mistake?

11 Mar 2008 09:40 pm

This Cato Unbound dialogue, kicked off by George Kateb's characteristically provocative anti-patriotism broadside, promises to be really, really interesting. (I hope one of the respondents brings up John Lukacs' patriotism/nationalism distinction; I'm curious what Kateb thinks about it.)

Chances that Kateb's article (which I basically came up with myself, in less erudite fashion, while still living in a dorm smoking pot) will cause today's political "conservatives" to experience any actual self-examination, God forbid shame, about their abuse of the concept of patriotism, particularly with regard to sending children to die in wars, but for many other causes also...zero.

Just reading the title of the post, one suspects this idea was borne of dweebs in a think tank.

Err, tank, yes, think, no.
