A Choice, Not An Echo (II)

Ramesh on Grand New Party:

Their ideas have been described as "Clintonian triangulation from the right." But people often misunderstand that parallel. They think Clinton chose the views of swing voters over those of Democratic voters. In a lot of cases, though, the liberal orthodoxies he abandoned had little support even among rank-and-file Democrats. Democratic voters liked the idea of "ending welfare as we know it." They liked his slapdown of Sister Souljah's remarks. Clinton had to push aside or change certain Democratic elites, not to change the worldview of his voting base.

Similarly, the Republican rank-and-file would, in the main, be willing to support the policies that D&S have in mind. A pro-family tax reform, for example, would have more support from those Republican voters than it has yet gotten from the conservative intelligentsia. On some issues the Republican rank-and-file would probably be willing to go further than I think wise. I imagine price controls for drugs would poll well among Republican voters, for example. In my new role as the elder statesman of the young turks—Brooks gave me the position in his column today—I will do my part to prevent populist excesses.

I would only add that price controls for prescription drugs represent an excellent example of the sort of me-tooism that I was talking about yesterday: It's an idea that would poll well among Republicans and swing voters alike - just like the reimportation of prescription drugs from Canada and Mexico, which Tim Pawlenty, the main who coined the "Party of Sam's Club" line, has seized on in his quest to chart a more reformist course - but it's a lefty idea and a bad one, and a GOP that takes it up would gain a short-term tactical edge at the expense of the party's (and the country's) long-term interest.

Ross,
Your position is not clear from your post, but is re-importing drugs from Canada lefty? A bad idea?

If so, why and why?

How is it 'lefty'?

As a matter of principle, I think that people ought to be able to buy whatever the heck they want from Canada-- DVDs, perscription drugs, p0rn mags, collectable spoons, etc. Government should get their hands off these people.

I hope that all of us that can will do our best to help Hillary Clinton pay off ALL of her campaign debt quickly. She deserves that. You all knew Hillary, and Bill would go out on a limb for us if they felt they had too. That's what they do. :-) As I said before Hillary Clinton was STUNNING!!!

You witnessed the greatest political campaign struggle in American history. One for the textbooks, and the history books. Hillary Clinton fought her heart out against all odds to win for all of the American people. While at the same time doing her best to prepare Sen. Barack Obama to win in November if he was the nominee. STUNNING!!! WELL DONE HILLARY CLINTON. WELL DONE! Your AMAZING! :-)

Sen. Obama could not have had a better opponent than Hillary Clinton. Nor could he have had a better opponent to prepare him for the battle royal to come against John McCain and the Republicans ahead of the November elections. Hillary Clinton was like a big Mama cat determined to teach her kitten how to hunt, and hang with the big dogs for the fights ahead. The Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it will take.

Hillary Clinton took Sen. Obama to every brawl, and cat fight she could find for him to develop his fight, and his chops. She even let her men (President Clinton, Governor Rendell, and many others) loose on Sen. Obama a little bit. So as to give Sen. Obama a taste of just how rough, and tough the big boys will be to do battle with. :-)

From sea to shining sea and US territories Hillary Clinton took Sen. Obama to see all of America. To meet, and greet all it's people. And to ask for their votes and support, which he will need if he becomes President. She took him to see what he will be fighting for. And to see what she and President Clinton have fought so heroically for over so many years. Sen. Obama could not have ask for any better. Nor had any better teachers.

Bill Clinton, Chelsea, Mrs. Rodham, and the whole Clinton team were magnificent. They really showed their metal. BRAVO! TEAM CLINTON... BRAVO!

And YOU! my fellow Americans. I'm so proud of you. And proud to be one of you. You showed what you are made of. And what makes America so great. You never gave up on your Champion Hillary Clinton. Time, and time again you eagerly waited your turn to vote for Hillary Clinton. To raise her up and pass her along down the line to the rest of your waiting fellow Americans.

You never gave up on her. Just as Hillary Clinton never gave up on you. No matter how many times they counted her out. No matter how many times her detractors, and attackers brutally knocked her down. You knew she would get back up and get after it. And when she did you were ready to support her. This is your role model America. AMERICA LOVES A FIGHTER. AMERICA UNDERSTANDS A FIGHTER. AMERICA IS A FIGHTER. I'M PROUD OF YOU AMERICA!

Sen. Clinton looked a little tired her first day back at work in the senate after her history making heroic campaign. She has good reason to be tired. Doesn't she America. But with time and good attention to the basics she, and you will recover. The basics are good well balanced nutrition, hydration, rest, exercise, recreation, POSITIVE! emotional support, and time (the greatest healer of all).

Y'all be good to President Clinton. I never saw a man fight so hard for a woman, and the American people as President Clinton fought for Hillary Clinton, and you. It's going to take Bill a while. No one except Hillary Clinton could have fought any harder than President Clinton did for you.

I imagine President Clinton still remembers how the American people wailed, reached, and cried out for him as he took that last flight home as your President on Air Force One after the 2000 elections. Yes, many of us knew back then what was coming for the American people under a republican administration. Back to living like dumb animals again. Fighting over territory, and scraps of meat. You are dieing like fly's now. Republicans too. But it's ok because some people are making a lot of money off of your needless deaths. :-(

As always, Hillary Clinton, and President Clinton did their best for all of us. It was an EPIC!

YOU MADE US VERY PROUD HILLARY CLINTON! HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH :-)

WE LOVE YOU. AND ADMIRE YOU...

jacksmith... Working Class :-)

Our host's new book has enthralled the right with it's promise of showing how a future Repub party can capture the votes of the 'Sam's Club' demographic. Now, I happen to have done a bit of shopping at Sam's and at Costco and his claim seemed very strange. The clientel I saw was the Repub party home base; they are the same people you'd see filing into the mega-church, attending the PTA meeting or supporting their kid's AYSO team.

Scarborough market reseach seems to agree. According to their survey of 'membership/big box' stores their customers seem likely to be the heart of their local Repub party: 80% caucasion, 40% plus 'professionals', more than 50% have Bachelors or higher degrees, 55 to 60% married, 80% own their homes, 55 to 60% with incomes greater than $50K.

Question: Why on earth would anyone write a book showing how to attract those good folks to Repub candidates?

Answer: Because the Repub policies have served their own voters very very poorly.

You could, of course, tell us why you think it's a bad, lefty idea.

I'm sorry but I've yet to see any coherent philosophy that delineates what liberal ideas you want to take on and which you don't want to take on. It just seems a little like a bland potpourri of ideas that poll well but have no intellectual cohesion. You deride the intelligentsia, but the reason they don't adopt your vision is because (as members of the intelligentsia) they have to have consistent ideology where the individual parts function interdependently. Has it occurred to you that maybe that's why they don't endorse your ideas?

Ditto to what Freddie said. Maybe I need to read the book, but I'm still not clear why goverment efforts like earned income tax credits to boost poor men's wages is OK, but allowing reimportation of drugs from Canada is not. I appreciate that you're taking on the "Drown it in the bathtub" approach to government, but the principles you're using to determine what forms of government assistance to working class are kosher and which are not remain very obscure.

i think he meant that price controls are lefty and bad.

It's a bad lefty idea partly because a lot of shoddy drugs get sold from sleazy Canadian firms and mostly due to denying American drug companies due compensation for expensive and often risky drug research. The best drugs in the world are coming from American and European companies willing to spend largely on complex research.

I think you are a little hard on the liberal repubs. First, they had a coherent philosophy, gov't should lend a hand to people in real need of help, deliver basic services competently and efficiently and in all other respects stay out of peoples lives. This may not strike you as a good philosophy, but it is more then me-tooism.

Among the virtues of this philosophy is that it allowed the republicans to have a non-pathetic presence presence in the Northeast. In New England, where the repubs used to have about half of the congressional seats, the republicans are four retirements away from having zero seats in this region. National parties are big tents, and the republican's purges have harmed them.

???
Are you claiming that the Canadians are breaking the patent on these drugs?
