How about A Song of Ice and Fire?
As a long-time Tolkien fan, I checked out the first novels by Donaldson and Brooks and Jordan after being assured by shiny-forehead types that "this one is different!"
hm. well, brooks sucks in so many ways i can't even start. jordan has some major issues with flat characters and over-writing. donaldson i think is original, but his world-building is pretty weak.
i second quietist, in that i think a song of ice and fire is a much more balanced offering....

They all sucked with such absolute suckitude that I remember the experiences the way you remember things like finding a dead pigeon in the garage that's been there for a couple of weeks. I don't think anyone who encounters such books after puberty will ever develop an affection for them.
