The fun continues. (And my name is fiendishly difficult to pronounce - it's "Dow-thut," to rhyme with south and mouth and almost every other "ou" word in the English language, but for some reason everyone defaults to Doo-that or Doo-tah - so I don't hold that against him.)

I used to pronounce it Dow-that. More or less a hybrid between the first two.
Also, interesting commenters you have here.
Doubt-that would be a good name for a pundit.
Consider:
cough
dough
rough
through
Common words all. Be patient with those who mangle your name's pronunciation.
Is Douthat the original name, or was it changed upon immigration to the US? And what is the original nationality? When I see "Douthat," my instinct, perhaps because I studied French for many years, is to break it into "Douth-at."
The "OU" then rhymes with "you" and the H is silent, as in the French word "Catholique." This would render "Douth" a homonym with the French word "doute." The result, however, would make for a rather silly sounding last name. "Doo-tat"? Camptown Races, sing that song, doo-tat, doo-tat!
I thought it was DOO-that, so glad to have that cleared up.
So Rush's conservatism is about one thing: individual liberty. So we therefore must know exactly what he things about first-trimester abortion, gay rights, prostitution, gambling, warrantless wiretaps, etc. What about drug use? :-)
For that matter, how about Scalia's opinion which says that a person's rights under the second amendment can be limited by where firearms are taken, what firearms can be used, etc.
As a liberal, I'm happy to see Rush continue to give conservatives a bad name. If we had a few more conservatives like Andrew Sullivan and Ross here running around, liberals would be in REAL trouble because then people might see that conservative ideals are built on more than just knee jerk hatred and vitriol.
The notion that Rush Limbaugh thinks conservatism is about individual liberty is a perfect hoot. Or rather, exhibit #Dodecylkazillion that he is a big fat liar. He's for individual liberty for privileged white pseudo-Chirstian straight men, and no one else.
But hey, you've got Rush Limbaugh and Steve Sailer talking about you. Whatta special day!

Yeah - how will he top that off? Maybe a little phone sex with Michael Savage, or a prostate massage from Sean Hannity?
Ross has hit the big-time now!
I don't normally condone those types of comments, but Moe, that was pure gold.
Moe sure seems to know a lot about the techniques of homosexual prostitutes. Who ever would have guessed?
Besides everybody, I mean.
A Bigger Loser says: "Moe sure seems to know a lot about the techniques of homosexual prostitutes."
I didn't even know Hannity was a prostitute. You must have known him before he was famous.
Well, I know I saw the "that" at the end of the word, and assumed it was a single syllable. So what to do with the dou? Made it rhyme with you. Do-that. It made sense, since it's similar to an existing name (Doolittle); I assumed the extra u was from the French.
Glad to have it corrected, I've been thinking "Do-That" for months now.
Funny how you mention he can't pronounce your name, but not that he doesn't even dignify Reihan's existence beyond "a buddy".
I think Rush only likes brown people when they're on their knees and underage.
Was the strategy that Reihan comes up with all the insight, and you come up with the white face so you can be on right-wing tv and radio?
I forgot - you did 'Ctrl+c' and 'Ctrl+v' a lot on Sailer's website.
In fact, Rush was born 'Rick Lungfish', but changed his name once he got into radio.
Ross might want to consider a nom de blog as well. 'Chucky Goldwater', or something like that.
Nice. Props Mr "Dow thut" (Thanks btw I was thinking it was doot hat).
Proof Possitive that once again Rush Limbaugh Stopped listening to himself and then he went deaf so he didn't have to listen to anyone else either.
Until I read your explanation of the pronunciation in Mr. Douthat's biography, I said his name, quite idiosyncratically, as DOWT-hat (doubt-hat?). I have a bad habit of resorting to weirdly exotic pronunciations when I encounter words of unfamiliar or unknown origins.
What's the origin of the name? Is it Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, or what?

You'd hold his balls on your chin if he kept mentioning you.
If only you were Dominican. and 12.
