WFB and Playboy

James Rosen offers an interesting and judicious account of the Buckley-Hefner relationship.

Born a century earlier, Bill Buckley would have been just another Oscar Wilde. He posed as a conservative, but really cared only about two things: antinominianism and style. Those two principles explain just about every feature of his life.

I don't see what the big mystery is here.

Moe, do you have "Dick Cheney's fondness for all-female snuff films" on Ctrl-V?

Given the body of WFB's work, you guys are throwing Bill under the bus on race. Ross didn't exactly paint a glimmering portrait of Buckley's segregationist views, but I guess that doesn't matter.

Take a look at WFB's archive on the Hillsdale website and type in "segregation." There are some cringe-inspiring passages in there, but the arguments he made had more to do with a cold, aristocratic detachment from reality on the issue, not some deep seated hatred for minorities. And as has been pointed out each time you bring this up, WFB took his medicine on this issue and acknowledged he was wrong.

As for the actual subject, can't say I care much that he wrote for Playboy.

Ferret writes: "Take a look at WFB's archive on the Hillsdale website and type in "segregation." There are some cringe-inspiring passages in there, but the arguments he made had more to do with a cold, aristocratic detachment from reality on the issue, not some deep seated hatred for minorities."

That actually makes it worse, chuckles. He knew better. He just didn't give a damn. Those of us with developed moral sensibilities would say that he is therefore more contemptible than some frightened hick.

James, Douthat the Hack, AND MoeLarryAndJesus posting on the same thread! I thought the mental hospital had a strict "Only one resident per thread may submit an annoying and mostly stupid post projecting their own sexual and/or other habits onto conservatives." Sigh.

Nice to see you stopped using pseudonyms Marlowe. And nice that you complain about posts by using ad hominem attacks.

I didn't mention sex, and D the H is referring to an incident Ross himself described.

Like the hospital said, it's all in your mind.

“Well, Jaime,” I said grandly, “neither do I, honestly. But you know, I think there comes a time in a man’s life when he has a chance to say to his grandchildren, I once went skinny-dipping with William F. Buckley, Jr. And this, Jaime, this is that chance.”

Sadly, not a parody. Ross's own words.

“Well, Jaime,” I said grandly, “neither do I, honestly. But you know, I think there comes a time in a man’s life when he has a chance to say to his grandchildren, I once went skinny-dipping with William F. Buckley, Jr. And this, Jaime, this is that chance.”

"Grandly," even!

The rapid shrinkage of the conservative movement may have started right then and there.

"Douthat the Hack" - Gauntanamo would be too charitable a fate for you. Same goes for the John McCain/trollop quote guy.

I'll take the bait. I knew that, Hack. After the first 700 times you or another trollop posted the quote, I saw the video, read Yglesias' post, etc. I even laughed a couple of times.

I think everyone gets it now.

ah - his fat fingers were working away as I posted.

Shame.

I think you find P Marlowe breaks the terms with his post. But then, it's not really about the terms, is it?

And I repeat:

Buckley worked on Playboy despite claiming to despise it because he was greedy and a hypocrite.

If this gets deleted, then at least we know what is really happening re 'civility'.

Apparently the "crack intern" is not very crack after all.

Holy, um, cow, I just got censored!

Though I guess I should've expected the C-word to be off-limits even if I'm quoting a presidential candidate and suggesting the insult be directed at a comic book villain.

Is this why you havent said hello and welcome yet, Ross?

"But Buchanan has always been big media's favorite bigot. And unlike the unsavvy racist (like say Steve Sailer)"

James quotes: ""But Buchanan has always been big media's favorite bigot. And unlike the unsavvy racist (like say Steve Sailer)""

This could be fun. And "unsavvy racist" is a great description of Sailer.

Sailer worked for Buckley, too. I wonder if he ever went bobbing for apples with the Great White Father.

"On returning to the boat, I mentioned to Jaime that although William F. Buckley Jr's face was very wrinkled, his testicles were amazingly smooth.

Two beautiful billard balls of the purest alabaster, with the cue leaning slightly - but obviously - to the right.

It was the happiest day of my life."

Yeah Moe, "Developed moral sensibilities" is the first thing that comes to mind when I read this thread.

Hack - why don't you ask your parents to take you to the stage performance of High School Musical and leave the rest of us be.

"Pat smoked beneath a vast black sun hat and talked about seeing The Producers, and about dinner with the Kissingers and the Limbaughs at Le Cirque."

The Kissingers and the Limbaughs! Oh how sad it was that the roof didn't cave in! What a contemptible bunch. I wonder why that nice Rusty Calley couldn't make it.

Ferret writes: "Yeah Moe, "Developed moral sensibilities" is the first thing that comes to mind when I read this thread."

But you support war criminals and torture, Ferret, so your viewpoint on moral matters is totally irrelevant. You have removed yourself from the circle of civilization.

"Hack - why don't you ask your parents to take you to the stage performance of High School Musical and leave the rest of us be."

Speak for yourself, Ferret. Unless you have multiple personalities, that "us" is just silly posing.
